The most important core FLL value for us it to have fun, and we had fun in many different ways. I am going to write about one such activity that we felt was full of fun.
Many of you might have heard of scratch, a software you can download or do on the web. Scratch is a visual programming tool which lets kids make games, art, movies, and, in our case, an advertisement. I don’t know about you, but before The Bot Squad was formed (this is our teams first year), I didn’t know what Scratch was. Most of the other team members didn’t either.
So, like I said earlier, we decided to promote our Tree App idea, we decided to make an advertisement using Scratch programming. First, we gathered four volunteers who wanted to work on Scratch, some of them, like me, didn’t know what Scratch was. Then, our kind and helpful coach walked us through some basic Scratch rules and let us explore on our own. Next, based on strengths and weaknesses, our coach assigned us each with a scene to animate. Finally, after we all finished animating, our coach helped us stitch the animations together into an ad.
Scratch is one of the many things me and my teammates have learned during our ongoing experience with the FLL. For all I know, my next book project could be made by using Scratch. Scratch is a useful tool that anyone with a computer can do. So, remember, next time you go onto the computer, go to scratch.mit.edu.
