As part of research, we quickly discovered that species of the tree is an important factor in determining the tree strength. Some species are inherently strong and can withstand strong winds, whereas some are fragile.
Also different species of trees can survive longer than others can. Some can stay strong in sandy soil and some will stay even if it doesn’t get watered in a long time, for example, arborvitae trees. Some even prefer dry soil! Most can’t stay without water. Apple trees need help to stay stable when they’re planted until the roots are firm in the ground. Sometimes a tree is mistaken for another tree that is very strong but is really not. Sometimes the opposite way. People think a tree is fragile so they cut it down even though they are strong. Some people buy trees that are hard to manage and they fall on the property causing damage.
Is is possible for the smartphone to determine the species by taking its photo? It is a hard question, we did some analysis talked to the experts and came to a conclusion that it is not always possible. However in some cases the smartphone app can guess the species based on the photo. However we feel that it is best for the app user to enter the species manually.
How is it possible to get this data on tree fragility and species? The team could not find a clear data source for this. However the research by the team found information that could be used to build this data. Below are some samples of tree fragility data from University of Florida -
